Celebrating National LED Light Day
No, we didn’t make it up!
In recognition of an important scientific achievement, certainly for our industry, National LED light day celebrates the achievements of Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano, and Shuji Nakamura who received the Nobel Prize in Physics for the development of blue light-emitting diodes on this day in 2014.

The earliest LEDs were created in the late 1950s and 1960s but produced only a red-coloured light. Slowly researchers developed other colours, but blue light presented significant challenges. Due to its shorter wavelength this proved much harder to reproduce. But with Akasaki, Amano, and Nakamura’s invention, white LEDs became possible.

Barcelona store LED lighting feature display by Widd Signs
to life bespoke, one of kind visual displays such as this multi-million-euro flagship Barcelona store, which sits at the heart of the famous Las Ramblas boulevard. This particular project featured 5,000 LEDs, individually wired using some 60,000 metres of cabling and driven by a 4 channel DMX system to randomly illuminate the LED’s resulting in a truly unique and eye catching feature.
