The end of last year saw us appointed to support the signage for a relocation of a schuh and schuh kids retail store to larger premises across the mall in the Metro Centre, Gateshead.
Retail giant schuh advises that it “was formed in the early ‘80s at the front of a revolution which saw individuals demand choice, colour and diversity.”
Did you know it very nearly wasn’t called schuh?
“Until the eleventh hour, Edinburgh’s newest shoe shop was to be called Lizard Shoes. But just as the original sign writer was preparing to write the word Lizard above the door, original founder Sandy had a change of heart and noticed a German fashion footwear magazine called Schuhe.”
“From that day forward, schuh was born with a name that most people couldn’t pronounce and those that could, just assumed we were German. Either way, there was something different about it.”
The first schuh opened in 1981 and as the brand has continued to grow we’re proud to have played a part in manufacturing the retailer’s signage for its stores including the Metro Centre’s new store move at the end of 2022.
We supplied and installed digitally printed wide format hoarding graphics which were reverse applied to the glazing, whilst shopfitting works were ongoing.
The external signs consisted of an internal framework clad in aluminium and suspended through the mall ceiling.
Structural calculations were required to make sure the framework was fit for purpose and able to withstand the loading of the signs and to determine the type of fixings required to fix the structure above the mall ceiling.
The signs consist of folded aluminium panels sprayed satin black to the front, rear and returns of the sign with built-up rimless illuminated letters, the green stripe affectionately known as a “Garry” stripe was manufactured using aluminium extrusion with a digitally printed fabric face which is back-illuminated.
The internal signs consist of a combination of:
- Internally illuminated faux neon “schuh” letters,
- Mirror-finished acrylic letters, reading STAY TRUE. STAY, schuh SHOES OFF!
- “Little ones” – 305mm cap height built up black aluminium letters with white halo illumination and coloured acrylic offset drop shadows in standard schuh colours.
- Non-illuminated kids wall slashes in printed green, yellow, pink and blue printed 5mm acrylic slashes.
We also supplied and fitted a number of back-of-house direct print ACM panels.
Now that’s a job well done!
